The process hall at Future Food Hub, with tall stainless-steel fermenters

Future Food Hub · Falkenberg, Sweden

Built for scaling precision fermentation in the EU.

A scale-up plant with 150,000 litres of fermenter volume, room to expand and its whole supply chain next door: farm supply, biomethane, renewable electricity and district heating. The building and the fermenters stand. The interior and the process line are left to finish.

Precision fermentation uses microbes to make specific ingredients, such as dairy proteins. The plant suits any type of biotech food production.

Why it is rare

Everything a fermentation plant buys, already around it.

A large building with its fermenters in place, ready to be finished to your own specification, with farm supply, biomethane, renewable electricity and district heating this close together. Most plants have to bring those inputs in or build them. Here they are connected or within a few miles.

Industry viewRam Nair, CEO of SMAQO, says there is no similar facility at this level in the EU.

Ownership and use

Your structure, your terms

The plant is privately owned. Ownership, use and terms are discussed directly with the owner group.

Start sooner

The building and fermenters already stand

Three 50 m³ fermenters are in place and food-grade permits exist. You complete the interior, add downstream equipment and commission.

Grow on site

5.2 acres and 35,000 sq ft of extension room

The property listing shows room to extend about 14,000 sq ft to the north and 21,000 sq ft to the west. Adjoining land can be bought from Falkenberg municipality.

EU market

Produce inside the single market

Sweden is an EU member. The E6 motorway is about 450 m (0.3 miles) from the site, and the on-ramp at Exit 51 is 1.4 km (0.9 miles, about 2 minutes) by car. Halland is part of the Greater Copenhagen region, with the harbour, Arla, Carlsberg and Lantmännen nearby. Research hubs within reach: Halmstad University, the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers, Lund and Copenhagen. The product itself still needs EU novel food authorisation.

The asset

Built to the shell. Yours to finish.

Built by a Swedish mycoprotein pioneer (mycoprotein is fungi-based protein grown by fermentation, the category Quorn belongs to), the building is designed with receiving, raw-material feed, a process hall, freezing and palletising, and two loading docks. The building, the fermenters and the connections are in place. A new owner completes the interior and the process line to their own specification, with no need to start from an empty plot.

The supply around the site

Four local loops, within reach of one building.

Primary production
Hallandfarmland, far more than the plant needs

A strong agricultural production region, with farm supply chains on the doorstep.

  • Falkenberg sits in one of Sweden's strong farming regions. Halland has far more farmland than this facility needs.
  • Lantmännen, a farmers' cooperative, handles grain through Falkenberg harbour. Arla runs its Falkenberg dairy, and Bertegruppen's mill and farm are about 8.5 miles away.

For a new owner: agricultural feedstock and farm partners within a short drive.

Biomethane
In the gridand connected to the building

Biomethane runs in the local gas grid, and the building is connected to it.

  • The site is connected to the gas pipeline and receives biomethane (renewable natural gas).
  • Biogas is produced locally and upgraded to biomethane for the grid.

For a new owner: biomethane for process heat or steam.

Renewable electricity
2.5MVA at 10 kV

About 2.5 MW of capacity in place, on a local supply that is almost fully renewable.

  • The local utility, Falkenberg Energi, reports 99.9% renewable operations and sells power from sun, wind and water under Bra Miljöval, a leading Swedish eco-label.
  • Sweden's first commercial wind turbine started in Falkenberg municipality in 1982, and wind power is part of the local supply.
  • The switchgear has space for a second unit when you expand.

For a new owner: fossil-free electricity for fermenters, cooling and freezing, with room to expand.

District heating and waste heat
26GWh potential

A district heating network, a utility for hot water, that already recovers industrial waste heat.

  • District heating is a city network of insulated pipes that delivers hot water to buildings, standard in Nordic towns. Falkenberg's is 100% renewable, from wood residues, waste heat, biogas and bio-oil from food production.
  • Heat from the Glesys data centre has fed the network since 2020. The potential is 26 GWh a year (about 89,000 MMBtu), roughly a quarter of all district heat and enough for about 1,700 homes.
  • The building is connected, and the network has said it welcomes more third-party suppliers.

For a new owner: fossil-free heat in, and a route to sell surplus process heat back to the network.

The surroundings

The heart of Halland's food industry.

Falkenberg is in Halland, on Sweden's west coast about 70 miles south of Gothenburg, on the E6, the main highway along that coast. Halland is on Eater's list of 11 food destinations worldwide. Falkenberg adds a harbour and an active food cluster.

Living in Falkenberg

A place people choose to move to.

Falkenberg is a coastal town of about 47,000 people in Halland, with a river through the centre, a long sandy beach, and the E6 and the west coast railway close by. For researchers, engineers and operators used to Lund or Gothenburg, it trades a big-city price tag for sea, space and an easy commute to the plant.

Connected

52 minutes to Gothenburg by train

A direct train runs to Gothenburg in about 52 minutes, roughly every hour. By car it is a little over an hour, and the E6 motorway is about 450 m from the plant. Gothenburg Landvetter is the nearest major airport. From Lund it is about two hours by train.

Sea and river

A beach, a salmon river and winter swimming

Skrea strand is a sandy beach about 2 km long, with a 250 m pier and around 1,600 bathing cabins. The Ätran river runs through the centre with salmon fishing, and swimming goes on all year.

Food and culture

On Eater's list of food destinations

Halland is on Eater's list of 11 food destinations worldwide. Ästad Vingård, east of town, is home to the Michelin-starred restaurant Äng. Varberg's fortress and 1903 cold-bath house are a short drive north.

A growing community

47,000 residents and rising

The municipality expects about 2,300 more residents over ten years. Halland has had more people moving in than out every year from 2002 to 2021, and life expectancy is above the Swedish average.

Housing, price per square metre

Gothenburg
SEK 51,900
Lund
SEK 44,300
Falkenberg
about SEK 30,000

Falkenberg is roughly 30 to 40% cheaper per square metre, about SEK 3.4 to 3.6 million (around $340,000 to $360,000) for an average house. Indicative only: the figures come from different sources and property mixes. Gothenburg is the 12-month average for apartments to 8 October 2026, Lund the 12-month average for all types (August 2026), and Falkenberg a range of SEK 28,000 to 32,000 depending on source (Svensk Mäklarstatistik, Booli and broker data, 2026).

The Swedish angle

Fits Sweden's call for a national scale-up facility.

In October 2026 the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) called for an open national scale-up facility for biosolutions of 100,000 to 200,000 litres of reactor volume. This plant has 150,000. The full case, in Swedish, is on the Swedish page.

100,000 to 200,000 Lreactor volume IVA proposes for the national facility
150,000 Lfermenter volume here, three fermenters of 50 m³
SEK 0.7 to 1.5 bnIVA's estimate for a new 200,000 L facility, about $70 to $150 million
20 to 30%cheaper, per IVA, to convert an existing facility
